When a mom becomes a "Fit mom."

It's becoming more popular.   You see It everywhere, twitter,  instagram, facebook. #Fitmom. Yes, I know it automatically annoys the crap out of some people.   But unless you're living it you may not understand it.

I use to think that way, I was super annoyed with the moms who had little ones and still looked amazing.  They talked about going to the gym, running, fitting in their old jeans just days or weeks after baby and I just wanted to smack them.  Seriously,  I totally get it.  After having my first c-section,  along with gaining around 60 lbs. I did not recognize my body.   What was this squishy, stretch marked mess I was handed?  I couldn't even get my old pants over my thighs!
So I gave up, and I really despised everyone that looked so good after having kids.  Fast forward a few years.  After a couple more kids, a lot more weight gained and lost, and finally coming to terms about my body, learning more about myself and what I needed, I understand.  They really were not doing it just to piss me off.  They were doing it to better themselves.  They were doing it to be healthy, to be able to run and play with their kids, to live longer for their kids.
I know a lot of people think that "fitmoms" are selfish.  I've actually heard people say "maybe you should play with your kids instead of wasting all that time exercising."  But in all honesty,  does it really hurt my kids if I get up before they even get out of bed (with daddy home of course) and go to the gym? Does it really scar them for life if they watch me do my at home workout while they're having a snack or coloring?  I doubt it.  Actually, I want them to see me working out.   I want them to know the importance of health.  No, I don't want to be obsessed with weight.  But I DO want them to know and understand the importance of being healthy.
It seems people either looove being fit and healthy or absolutely, positively, despise it.  So, let me just say it's OK to not love working out.  But it's also ok to not make fun of people and be mean to people who do.  It's OK to not want to eat healthy all the time.  But that doesn't mean you have to constantly down someone who prefers vegetables over chocolate (yes it's possible.)

I promise "fitmoms" are not out to get you. They are absolutely not trying to make you feel worse about yourself.  In fact it's quite the opposite!  They want to motivate you and show you that if you want it bad enough,  it is possible.  They also are not doing it as some midlife crisis, or because they're cheating on their significant others.  (Yes some people actually think that.)  No they don't do it for attention,  or for other men to see them but yes it does feel good when your husband notices your hard work and gives you a little pat on the butt once in a while ;)  When you feel better about yourself it makes all the difference in the world about how you present yourself.  You feel better in clothes, you feel better naked, you just feel better, which of course makes you a happier person. Many people think there has to be a motive when someone starts working on bettering  themselves but actually,  it's just that simple.  They know they can be better so they want to be better.

I'm definitely not saying it is everyones thing.  There is no reason to be ashamed of your size whether your plus size or naturally a size zero.  As long as you're HEALTHY and happy. That's all that truly matters.

Just do me a favor and remember this. When one of your friends (or for any men reading) your wives, start working out a little more, eating healthier, etc. I know your first thought may be "oh great now we have to see her health posts and gym selfies."  Stop yourself.  Because she doesn't need anyone else bringing her down.  Resist the urge to make fun of her, or to tease her with brownies.  Don't mock her, or tell her it's just a phase.  I'm sure she's fought herself enough with all of that and is probably a little nervous about her new choices.  What she needs is a friend.  Someone to back her up, tell her she absolutely CAN do this.  Tell her you're proud of her!  You don't have to want to do it yourself but you don't have to bring her down either.  She needed support when she found out she was pregnant, when she was fighting her newborn with a tongue tie to latch on.  When the kids had completely destroyed the house and she hadn't showered in days.  She had your support then, she still needs it now. This is her chance to work on herself so she can feel better.  She deserves it.  So, even if you don't agree.  Just be there.  I promise she will notice and will be so very, very thankful.

Oh, and the next time you see #Fitmom resist the urge to roll your eyes ;) and just smile instead!

Let's talk pre-workout food!

I follow different rules depending on which type of workout I'll be doing.

{Cardio Workout}
If you're going for a run or to hit the treadmill reach for food that is mostly complex (healthy) carbs, 75% to 100%, 30 mins to an hour before getting started.
*Carbs are metabolized into glucose (energy) very quickly*

{Strength Training}
If you're headed to the gym or to do some strength training workouts try to get in a meal/snack that's 75% complex carbs and 25% protein, 1 to 2 hours before your workout. *Proteins must first be broken down into amino acids in order to be used by muscles to repair and build lean tissue*

Just a few foods to choose from:
Oatmeal
Berries
Bananas
Eggs
Whole grain bagel or toast
Yams
Protein shake

Too much of a good thing?

Citrus- can cause an upset stomach if you have a delicate digestive system.
Fibre- can cause unnecessary bulk to your stomach that can cause pain and cramps.
Dairy- Can lead to congested airways when you gulp for air.
Quantity- remember for a light simple snack/meal. I aim for around 200 calories.

Always remember:
Keep it simple
Easy to digest
Always hydrate
FOOD IS YOUR FUEL!

H20 Yes, It's THAT important.

I'm sure by now you've heard to drink more water.  But do you listen?  I have people ask all the time what the best supplements are or about "diet" drinks.  My answer is the same.  Good ol' H2O.  Seriously it is SO important to get your water in, especially if you're working on your health or losing weight.

How much water should I be drinking?

Take your weight in lbs.  Divide it by 2.  Take that number in ounces and there you go!  You need to be trying to drink at LEAST that much water a day.  For example, a woman that weighs 160 lbs should be getting in at least 80 ounces of water.

Benefits of Water

  1. Energy Booster-  The most common cause of fatigue is dehydration.  Drink a couple glasses when feeling fatigued and you should start feeling more alert.
  2. Increases Metabolism- which in turn promotes weight loss.
  3. Healthy Skin-  The more hydrated your body is the better your skin will look!
  4. Flush out Toxins- Get rid of that stuff!
  5. Regulates body temp- Very important during exercise and hot days.
  6. Prevents Constipation-  Need I say more?
  7. Helps build and repair Muscle- Vital in muscle recovery.
  8. Combats bloating-Yes, I know it sounds counter productive but the more water you drink the less you will bloat!
  9. Lubricates and cushions your joints-  Helping to reduce the risk of developing arthritis.
  10. You NEED it!!-  Seriously, your body just NEEDS IT!!

Tips to get more water in!

  1. Add fruit!  Try out different kinds and see which flavors you like best.  MUCH better than all the artificial flavorings that are available.  You can buy pitchers or single serve bottles to infuse your own and have it ready for you whenever you want!
  2. Coffee drinker?  Drink some lukewarm water with lemon in the morning.  You still get your warm drink plus all the benefits of the fresh lemon!
  3. Invest in a cute bottle!  Find a bottle you love and buy it.  The more you like your bottle the more you will keep it with you.
  4. Try it with a straw!  Switch it up a little and try drinking through a straw.  You'll be able to drink larger amounts in a shorter amount of time.
  5. Track intake with apps!  There are lots of apps to try on your phone Waterlogged is a great one.
  6. Or go old school and write it on your bottles!  Mark your gallon jug or bottles with times to make sure you get it in.
  7. Always take a bottle in the car.  Driving to work?  Drink up.  To the gym?  Drink up. Ballgames and practices?  You guessed it, drink up!  Make it a habit to always have water with you on the go.  Keep it fresh though,  don't leave bottles in the sun all day and then drink them.
  8. Find what works for you.  Some people like it super cold.  Some like it warmer.  Try different things out until you learn the way you prefer it then stick with it.
  9. Make it a contest!  We do this a lot in our online fitness groups.  Make everyone keep track and see who can get the most in!  Try it with your coworkers or spouse.  You can even place a little wager to make it more interesting ;)
  10. Get rid of the other stuff.  Let's face it, if you have a 12 pack of pop in the fridge you're probably going to drink it.  The less other stuff you drink the more water you will drink!  Your body knows it needs it.  Fill it up with the good stuff!

Any other great ideas to add?  Let us know in the comments!  If we get more tips and tricks we'll add them to the list!

A little bit of me..

Hey, everyone! I'm the other half of Mamas InLove With Fitness! I wanted to take a minute and give you all a little back story of what has lead me to where I am today in my fitness journey.

In high school I'd describe myself as athletic. I played sports and because of that (and paired with being young) I ate whatever I wanted. I never really gave a second thought to health, I was always active so in my mind it just took care of itself! Once out of high school I gained 30-35 lbs because my activity level went down to almost ZERO and I continued to eat whatever I felt like eating (turns out I love food). After feeling unhealthy and just plain bad about myself I started the whole yo-yo dieting trend. I've tried no carbs, low cals, cabbage soup diet..I've done them all. But I ALWAYS gained back what I had lost. This went on for a few years with no real weight loss and I definitely wasn't getting healthier!

I then got married and basically, sometimes I was happy with myself but most of the time I wasn't. After a year of marriage I became pregnant with my first babies, twin boys! I ended up losing one at 7 months but carried them, the other twin was perfectly healthy, to term and delivered them naturally! Only 6 months later, oops, I was pregnant with my second baby boy! I obviously didn't have time to lose all the baby weight from my first so I just packed on more. My second delivery didn't go as smooth as the first one and I ended up having an emergency c-sect.

So, there I was with a 15 month old and a newborn after pretty much back to back pregnancies with A LOT of extra weight! I decided I wanted to lose the weight once and for all and do it the RIGHT way and be a happy & healthy mom! At first I started running and eating a little better, cutting out pop and things like that and it made a difference. I got back down (slowly) to pre-pregnancy weight but I wanted to get back to my average weight, a weight I was more comfortable at. I continued to do little things and run but I hit a plateau.

Jump to when my sweet boys were 4 & 5, about a year ago, I heard about a at-home workout program called T25 on Facebook. I eventually ordered the program and jumped into an accountability group and became a Beachbody coach and my SIL (the other owner of Mamas In Love With Fitness) jumped in with me! The support and motivation of her (she's pretty awesome) and my coach, Dara from Mamas With Muscle was the push I needed. I'm still currently a coach and have done T25, P90X3 and The 21 Day Fix but I also still occasionally run and just started going to a gym and lifting, a little over a month ago! I'm probably in the best shape I've ever been in at 30 years old but I still have farther to go!

Kelsie (my SIL) and I HAD to have that support to push for our goals and fell in love with helping others in the process, so we decided we wanted to do whatever we could to make that possible. I can help you with an accountability group for support and motivation and/or an in-home program and SOON we will also have workout programs and meal plans of our very OWN to offer! I'm so excited to be able to help more moms (or anyone) get their bodies back and just get healthy! I've learned a lot about myself through fitness, one being that I LOVE it, but another is that I actually love the nutrition side of it! I can't wait to get started on my nutrition & wellness consultant certification this summer and help people be the healthiest they can be! We will keep everyone updated on our progress and have more for you soon <3

Welcome to my crazy world.

Welcome to our blog!  I'm still figuring things out here, so bare with me it's a little plain jane for now.

Let's see, where to start?  I've always gone back and forth with my weight.  Being a little "thick" through most of my teenage years.  Then, when I moved out on my own and started going out all the time making my health the last of my worries I lost quite a bit of weight.  After about a year of that I fell in love and got pregnant with my first child.  I made that an excuse to eat anything and everything I wanted.  It was a free for all.  I ended up having a complete placental abruption which meant emergency c-section.  After gaining nearly 60 lbs and the c-section I didn't care about myself at all.  I figured I'd never get my figure back so why try?!  Fast forward a couple years and getting pregnant with #2.  I still hadn't lost much of the weight from my first so I only added about 25 more lbs this time.  I went into pre-term labor and with the fear of another abruption, had another c-section.  My husband is in the oilfield which meant he was gone almost all of the time (no exaggeration there.) Needless to say it was a little hectic at times with a 2 year old and newborn so once again, my weight and health was at the bottom of the list.  I was definitely at my heaviest at this point.  I'm not exactly sure what I weighed because I avoided the scales like the plague.  I also can't find many pictures from this time because I made sure no cameras ever caught me.
After the first year things started calming down and we started to get a routine.  I started caring about myself a little more and started eating better and walking whenever I could.  My sister in law, who had 2 boys just 15 months apart (our second children were born 1 day apart!)  also started getting healthy which helped SO much.  We spent the next couple of years working on ourselves (while supporting each other) and getting healthier.  Go forward a little more to our trip to Mexico!  I was finally at a weight I felt good with and feeling pretty good about myself!
Me on the left with my sister in law/bf in Mexico!

We had a blast on vaca and just a bit after coming home I started feeling a little funky and guess what?!  What happens in Mexico, doesn't always stay in Mexico!  Baby #3 was on  the way :)  It was a rough pregnancy.  I started having contractions at just 16 weeks and was put on weekly progesterone shots.  I was on and off of bed-rest with lots of limitations so I once again gained around 50 lbs.  Another c-section and very rough birth.
Family of Five!

After being pumped full of fluids and a few rough days in the hospital we were able to go home.  I stepped on the scales to see that I had lost ONE pound.  Yes I was devastated.  I was huge, and swollen, and miserable and feeling absolutely horrible for feeling so bad when I had just been blessed with another beautiful, healthy baby boy.  I caught a bit of the baby blues but went on with life and figuring out how to juggle our new life.  After being cleared for exercise I knew I had to start something.  When I was around 3 months pp I stumbled upon a fb page of a beachbody coach talking about T25 (Dara from Mamas With Muscles.)   I chatted with her a bit and decided I HAD to try it and join one of her accountability groups.  It was JUST what I needed.  Someone to check in to, share recipes with, it was perfect.  The day before my 10 weeks was up I hit my pre pregnancy weight.  BUT the absolute best part was how great I felt!  I was happy, healthy, I could chase after all three kids!!  It was a life changer for sure.
In the meantime, my sister in law had also done the same and signed up to be a coach herself!  It seemed perfect so I signed up under her.  We were losing weight, getting healthy, and having a blast doing it!  Things have pretty much kept on since then.  Our main goal is to show other moms they CAN get healthy!  We have to make ourselves a priority in this crazy life and sometimes it is super hard to learn the balance.

We are always trying to learn more and better ourselves while on this journey to help others.  I am working on getting certified for personal training while Cim (my wonderful sil) is the nutrition expert!  I plan on doing some sort of competition next year (eek! did I really just post that for the world to see?!)  and we have LOTS of plans to offer other moms, and all women or men for that matter.  In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us for anything.  Whether it's through personal training, Beachbody, nutrition, or just support (that's a BIG one) we will do whatever we can to help you!

We will share our journey, workouts, healthy recipes, and lots of other fun stuff so keep checking back!
